Medina’s championship dreams shattered by Salamanca’s second-half takeover

Lockport Journal Preview: "Medina was 24 minutes away from erasing those memories, but its halftime lead quickly disappeared as second-seeded Salamanca scored 22 second-half points behind a combined five-touchdown, 354-yard performance from quarterbacks Jakson Ross and Maddox Issac led to a 36-23 victory in the Class C championship game Friday at Highmark Stadium, denying the top-seeded Mustangs an unbeaten season and a third sectional title in four seasons."

SEC VI. FOOTBALL: Medina falls in Class C title game to Salamanca

The Daily News Preview: "The No. 1 seed Mustangs had allowed just 55 points all season and had posted five shutouts - including two in the postseason - but they had no answer for a balanced offense from No. 2 Salamanca in the championship. The Warriors put together big play after big play, both on the ground and through the air, as they pulled away from Medina for a 36-23 victory to claim the block in Orchard Park."

“I’m just so proud,” Salamanca head coach Chad Bartoszek said. “It’s everything … This community is special and just getting this for them, it means everything.”

'ROSS STRONG' Salamanca captures first sectional title since 2001

WNY Athletics Preview: “I’m blown away,” Bartoszek said. “I’m trying to figure out how to respond emotionally here. There’s a lot to this. It’s been a tough year for us. We’ve got some other things that went on this year that made this special.”

He paused, his voice breaking. Two months had passed since his former Warriors teammate Darren Ross, a star athlete and beloved member of the Salamanca community, had died of brain cancer at the age of 43. The memory is still fresh.

“This game is for Darren,” Bartoszek said after Salamanca won its first sectional title since 2001. He’s the ultimate warrior. There was something special in our team. There was something special in Jaxson (Ross, Darren’s son). This one’s for him.

"I’ve been waiting to say that all year. I’m just so proud. I’m so happy we got to represent what Ross Strong means.”
